A Morning Hike [Sourwood and Rhubarb]
« Thread Started on Sept 2, 2008, 7:26pm »

Not far off from the warren was a creek. And oh, how Rhubarb loved creeks. Their current always seemed to be laughing at a joke that no one could hear. It always enlightened the young buck. The little stones that shimmered beneath the the water's crown were the luckiest stones in their family. The lithe water curving around their muted little bodies and the short water-grass weaving along with the liquid wind. Rhubarb could stay in this place for ever; it seemed that Frith had a good day when he placed rabbits with this wonderful, giggly creek. But today this creek was as calm as a breezy day, its current only flowing with the slightest care of where it was heading. The depth of the river like creek was dangerous, yet Rhubarb was found where he would normally be found when near a creak. In the shallows. No fish swam close enough for the deep brown eyes to catch a glimpse, though there were a fair number of glorious, hasty minnows splashing in the midst of the creek's journey. He heaved a sigh and went back to taking short sips of the cool water. He twitched his whiskers with every swallow, each making him shiver more than the last. Deciding his time was done with the large creek, he jumped out of the water and headed for the warm grasses and flowers.

Only a few short hops and Rhubarb was in a brilliant patch of lush green grasses and vibrant yellow Cowslips. Slowing down to a near stop, Rhubarb went on discovering the little world that lay beneath his paws. The lady birds were rare and radiant against the green, the ants had retreated to their hills for the oncoming winter and the butterflies were as active as ever. Summer was not yet over, but the world seemed to be stirred by the coming seasons. Overhead, an array of Canadian Geese were flying to wards their southern destination. Their calls could be heard from the very edge of this meadow and down below the water of the quick creek. The sign of life around the buck hugged him like a blanket and the still bright summer colours painted the tranquil landscape. But Rhubarb was looking forward to the fall. He loved the colours the trees took on, and the calm feeling it came with. But for now it was summer, and summer it shall be for the next few suns.

Finally after his short daydream, he listened to his twisting stomach. He hopped over to a patch of Cowslips and munched on their bright yellow heads. Their taste was sweet and delicious; he had forgotten how wonderful the little flowers were over his trip. He had tuned out of his sense of taste and overall care of what things tasted like. All he cared about was getting to his destination safely and alive. Unfortunetly he had and not his brother. The thought brought him great sorrow. It was like a flash flood had just dawned over the horizon of Rhubarb's mind. It brought him to his best friend, his whole family in fact and Maerell. He gave a strict, rapid shake of his head to get out of the invisible ditch. He loved the memories, but not the unpleasant ones. Suddenly he had no urge to eat, so he moved on.

With his ears high above his head, he bounded into the field. The grass flattened to their grounded shoes when the buck stepped over them. His speed was as quick as the fish in the creek. The blessing Lord Frith had given to the rabbits was a great gift that some rabbits may take for granted. He thanked the Lord whenever he could. Not far after a small hillock, appeared another body. No fear was found in the eyes of the jubilant Rhubarb, for the body was of a rabbit. He hadn't come across many lapines during his journey, this was a pleasant surprise to his morning hike. Who knows, maybe he's a light rabbit.. Maybe he's in my warren! The thought brought him great happiness and curiosity. If this buck was indeed in his warren, would he accept him? Maybe he'd have the friend he'd been longed for, the friend he needed. But because Rhubarb was so shy and collected, many rabbits would double-think of becoming an affiliate with Rhubarb. The buck looked young, only a moon or two younger than himself it seemed. He came to a stop before he crested the short ridge, he let his deep eyes look at his once again, new surroundings. He had yet to explore this area of life.

After a few moment's time, he jumped down the hill to wards the doe. He hadn't felt so outgoing in many moons! But what if he got frightened and bolted at the sight of the contracting path in between the two rabbits. For all Rhubarb knew, he may not even be in his warren let alone be interested in meeting him. Nevertheless, he pushed the thought aside and slowed his pace as he approached the lapine. He practically stumbled on his words as he said them, his courage had depleted with the thought of conversation. Rhubarb liked silence, but he liked company too.

'So, hi.. um.. I'm Rhubarb...'

Sourwood had been laying peacefully in the sun. It sometimes helped his angry thoughts drain away, and it often let him have some peace from his life, the life he once knew, and the life he'd have in the future, whatever that would be. He was nice and calm, this arrow-like rabbit, and he was so calm he hadn't paid attention to the other rabbit. Maybe he knew it was always there, but, maybe, and more likely, he had no idea it was there.

Sourwood closed his eyes, dreamily. 'Ah..if this sun never ends for me..may Lord Frith feel proud..' Sourwood hardly ever had moments like this, and soon they were always interrupted by some sort of noise, or, some sort of movement. The wind, the geese, a bug, or on rarer occasions..a lendri or a fox. Sourwood had never had to outrun a fox, and maybe if he had too, this would be a good thing, maybe a broken leg wouldn't make Sourwood feel so proud.

Sourwood just began a nice dream, when he was little. A time when his sister and mother were still alive, a time where his father was still happy, and full of will and wit. Even though his parents were probably the worst kind-unexperienced, and without a warren-it helped to only remember, at a time, they only cared about their kits. Sourwood had a slight smile on him, but soon darkness faded over his dream, to the night where the great lights came at them..and how everything in that split moment...was lost.

Sourwood opened his eyes, just at the part where their father was about to get hit, and he let out a terrible scream, and heard and saw the other rabbit. Sourwood jumped to his paws, his eyes looking at Rhubarb. Sourwood panted slowly, "Wha? Huh..What were you thinking!? Can't you.." Sourwood shook his head, his sharp, angry tone of voice, which was as quick as the wind past in and out of Sourwood, as he came out of his sleepiness, and back into realty.

The sun didn't seem as bright as before. "Oh..Oh..sorry..Rhubarb." Sourwood spoke quickly, though his words did not run together, and soon, Sourwood spun around, muttering, "No Hrududu...N-No H-h-hrududu here.." Sourwood made a short sigh, and his head flicked around so he stared right at Rhubarb. "I'm Sourwood; quick as the wind, I am." Sourwood said proudly, though his back left leg he held up a little, as if it hurt, as if it carried a limp.
